Nikkei Cultural Society

The Nikkei Cultural Society of Lethbridge and Area (NCS) was established in 2001 after the folding of the former Lethbridge and District Japanese Canadian Association (LDJCA). At the outset, it’s main purpose was to facilitate a history book project entitled, Nishiki: Nikkei Tapestry: a History of Southern Alberta Japanese Canadians. However, since then the NCS has become a central organization in all activities related to Japanese and Japanese Canadian arts, culture and history.

It’s Kotowaza Friday and we have an interesting En It’s Kotowaza Friday and we have an interesting English proverb for you all today.

Different from the other Kotowaza we have seen before, this proverb comes in the form of a question. Have you ever heard of it before?

One can imagine that a piece of bread falling butter side down is quite sad indeed, but if someone always believes the butter side to touch the ground, they may be a pessimist.

Next time you see someone that is being a bit of a pessimist, rather than saying that they are “half full, half empty,” you can use this proverb.

“Derukui wa utareru” is a proverb that epitomizes Japan, the Land of the Rising Sun. If you didn’t know, Japan is a collective country, thus people who are different may be criticized.

While not a quote to aid in making us better, this proverb reminds us that each country has different ways of thinking that we should acknowledge.

Today’s proverb, “Jigou-jitoku,” translates to “self-work, self-profit,” and can mean “Hard work pays off” or “What goes around comes around” depending on the context.

The temperatures are getting cooler, the leaves are falling, which means fall is coming around the corner.

Japan also experiences fall, however it lasts a bit longer than in Canada.

The way you say “Fall” in Japanese is “Aki.”

Make sure to enjoy the rest of summer while it still lasts!
