Minyo Dancers

Odori

Japanese folk dancing has a long tradition in Southern Alberta. Obon Festival dancing was being performed in the 1930s and ‘40s. The Momiji professional dance group was formed in the late 1970s and remained active for more than 30 years.

The NCS Minyo Dancers continue that tradition with a very active schedule of public performances. The senior members also lead practice for the annual Bon Odori Festival at Galt Garden. More recently, a beginner dance group has been created to allow anyone to learn minyo dancing.

Nikkei Seniors Health Care & Housing Society is working to reach out and provide support to Japanese Canadians displaced during the Second World War.
